My Top 10 Christian Books

Based upon the long running BBC Radio 4 programme ‘Desert Island Discs’, we are hoping to compile a list of books that contributors feel should be essential for any young believer’s library.

Many of the books recommended by the contributors to this list are available either new or second-hand. We have included details of some of these suppliers on the Links page. This should not be taken as an endorsement of everything that appears on those sites.

  • BIBLE: The New Testament - an Expanded Translation by Kenneth Wuest
  • The preface tells us what this is “This translation uses as many English words as are necessary to bring out the richness, force, and clarity of the Greek text”. It is therefore a translation but it is more than that, if you’ve ever seen the Amplified Bible it is something akin to that.

  • Expository Dictionary of Words
  • by W. E. Vine
  • We do not need to be Greek scholars nor even learn Greek to study the NT; however an understanding of the precise meaning of the words and phraseology of the language in which the NT was originally written is essential for every serious student. Mr Vine, who was a Greek scholar, has done all the hard work for us and his dictionary is an invaluable resource.

  • Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible
  • by J. Strong
  • Maybe you know a verse but can’t recall where it is found, or perhaps you know a few words of a verse but can’t quote it all – James Strong’s concordance will resolve both of these issues for you. This concordance shows every word in the AV and every occurrence of each word, all listed alphabetically – each is also given a numeric code (see next 2 books).

  • Hebrew and Chaldee Lexicon to the Old Testament
  • by Gesenius
  • This - and the next book - appeared as “companion” books to Strong’s concordance; it is a dictionary of OT words numerically coded to Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance.

  • Greek English Lexicon to the New Testament
  • by Thayer
  • This - and the previous book - appeared as “companion” books to Strong’s concordance; it is a dictionary of NT words numerically coded to Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance.

  • Guide to the Bible
  • by Wilmington
  • This is a huge book – there’s a 1009 pages to it – which covers a vast array of bible doctrines, history, outlines and much more. It deals with such subjects as the doctrines of the Trinity, Angels, Satan, Prophecy and gives an outline of each bible book.

  • Roget's Thesaurus
  • by P. Roget
  • I’m not aware that Peter Roget was a Christian and certainly his thesaurus wasn’t produced from any spiritual motive and hence the editor of this section may be surprised at my including it in my list of top 10 Christian books. However as someone who finds alliteration a huge help to remember bible outlines I use this book extensively when studying a section of the word of God. If you’re not sure what a thesaurus is look it up in Google or a dictionary.

  • Things to Come
  • by J. D. Pentecost
  • For anyone with an interest in studying future events as revealed in the bible this book is an absolute must. It aims to give an insight into some of the different views that are held and then come to definite conclusions. It is easy to read, well laid out and comprehensive in its coverage of this vital subject.

  • Treasury of Bible Doctrine
  • by J. Heading & C. Hocking
  • This book develops teaching on a variety of basic truths including the Scriptures, God, Christ, the Holy Spirit etc. Most of the contents had previously appeared as articles in the Precious Seed although several were specifically written for the book. It is well written, easy to read and deals with each subject sufficiently to give the reader a good grounding.

  • What on earth is God doing?
  • by R. Showers
  • This traces the origins, course and outcome of Satan’s conflict with God.

  • Maranatha - Our Lord come!
  • by R. Showers
  • Everything I have read by Mr Showers has impressed me and been of much benefit. His works include “There Really is a difference” (a comparison of covenant & dispensational theology); “Maranatha - Our Lord, Come! (a definitive study of the rapture of the church) and the one named above.
